ER knife handle; GER knife handle; Differences in SKS tool handles

In 1972, the Swiss cutting tool company invented the ER clamping system, which changed the cutting tool clamping industry. And it became a DIN standard (JIS B 6339) in 1993. Today, ER spring collets are widely used in various clamping systems.
But with the development of the times, high-speed machining technology has undergone rapid development. In high-speed machining, the high-speed rotation and accuracy requirements of the cutting tools are very high. Therefore, with the development of the market, GER tool holders and SKS tool holders have gradually emerged. This article will introduce the similarities and differences between GER and SKS tool holders based on ER tool holders.
The biggest advantage of the GER and SKS tool handles compared to the ER tool handles is that they both have high-speed, windless pressure caps. In high-speed machining, as the cutting tool rotates, the cutting fluid and air will generate resistance between the slots of the ordinary ER pressure cap, generating centrifugal force. This resistance will affect the overall machining runout accuracy, thereby affecting the machining quality and tool loss. The emergence of high-speed windless pressure caps can reduce resistance and provide better machining quality for high-speed cutting tools.
The GER and SKS tool handles are both high-speed tool handles, but the difference is:
ER collet has a larger taper and a wider range of diameter changes. This feature allows the ER collet to have a diameter range of between 1 millimeter
SK collet has a smaller taper and a smaller diameter range, but can withstand greater clamping force
ER has international standards (DIN6499); There is no international unified standard for SKS
At present, in the market, ER tool holders are commonly used for machining (with good general performance), while SKS tool holders are used for high-speed cutting (without wind resistance). If there is a demand for high-speed and deep cavity high-precision machining, SF heat shrink tool holders can be considered
In summary, ER tool holders, GER tool holders, and SKS tool holders each have their own advantages, and different types of tool holders can be selected in different machining environments to achieve the best machining results.
